Calistoga Ranch,
An Auberge Resort

Calistoga, California

SB Architects has created a sanctuary of private bungalows literally nestled in the woods of northern California for the Calistoga Ranch resort in Napa Valley.

Elevating the idea of indoor/outdoor living to a new level, the rooms and patios of Calistoga Ranch are thoughtfully built around trees and branches where they stand in a largely untouched forest. Broad cedar planks, outdoor living rooms with two-way fireplaces, outdoor rain showers, and folding glass walls preserve the essence of the surrounding wilderness, while wood and stone decorative accents compliment the resort’s neutral palette.

Project Size

157 acres with the resort resting on 17 acres

Components

  • 50 resort lodges
  • Lodges range from 600-2400 square-feet of indoor/outdoor space
  • 24 residential lodges
  • Two pools
  • Wine cave
  • Lakehouse restaurant
  • Spa with five indoor/outdoor treatment rooms

Materials play an important role in creating a design that combines the “cabin in the woods” atmosphere appropriate to the project’s setting and philosophy with a sophisticated resort experience. Rustic materials such as cedar shingles, dry-stacked stone and copper roofs, (which will patina over time), have been combined with sleek materials such as black steel doors and steel airline cable deck railings. Floor to ceiling windows erase the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, which then blend together to create a single integrated experience.

Typical guest lodges consist of two modular units, while owner lodges consist of four modules. The modules are all individually arranged around site contours, trees and rock outcroppings, connected by decks, bridges and outdoor living area.

Set within an intimate and forested area of the property the spa has 5 indoor/outdoor treatment rooms including a couple’s suite. The spa experience with therapies based on the healing properties found in ingredients indigenous to Calistoga and the Napa Valley.

We are heartbroken to share, that in October 2020, Calistoga Ranch, was destroyed by the devastating California Glass Fires. We continue to mourn the loss of this fabled property, one of our firm’s iconic projects and clearest examples of SB’s empathetic design approach.
