Four Big Takeaways from The Glamping Show 2022
Josh Abbey, Director of our new studio, SB Outside, recently headed to Colorado for the annual The Glamping Show USA. After two days of immersing in glamping, here are his four big key takeaways:
Glamping Isn’t Going Anywhere
Over the last three years, there’s been a 55% increase in glamping trips, with 74% of guests intending on glamping again in the future, I’ll give you three guesses as to why, but you’re only going to need one. Back in May 2020, we wrote an article on the ‘Road Trip Revival’, as Covid restrictions began to ease, the urge to jump into a car and escape into nature was undeniable, and the ‘drive-to’ market began to flourish. It’s reported that now, guests are willing to drive up to 50 miles away from their accommodation for National Parks, beaches, forests, etc. from their accommodations
In the U.S. alone, glamping is a $200 billion dollar industry, with 60% of glampers willing to pay at least $250 per night. There are currently around 6.5k glamping sites, a whopping 310% increase over the last 10 years!
Disconnect to Connect
The call for people to disconnect and immerse in nature was omnipresent pre-Covid and has grown exponentially since. Not only is glamping light-on-the-land, it’s also great for the local community with guests spending 45% more in the area than typical campers.
Expectations are Rising
The typical glampers are Millennials, households with children, and households with an income of around $100k+. Guests will usually travel up to 100 miles and typically stay an average of 3-5 nights per trip. 30% of guests are now expecting linens and full service provided on-site.
Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury for glampers, it’s a pre-requisite, with almost all guests expecting access. Owners/operators can monetize by offering a free base speed, with the option of guests adding enhanced speed and streaming options at a cost.
Tapping into the Guest Psyche
Getting higher mid-week occupancy is a struggle, but owners/operators could host events, cater to weddings, and draw in local F&B to provide food trucks to boost.
Pet-friendly units are a must. Partnering with local dog groomers, walkers and daycare would be a smart option to provide guests with the option of some free time.
Offering a waterproof contactless payment system at pool areas could boost revenue by 20%!
